F.I.R.E.

We had a fire at our house this week. You won't believe where it came from.

Remember we are old - having trouble walking, even sitting here is PAINful. And we are trying to sell our home.  So we hired a professional cleaning company to come clean our house for an open house. (I don't know about you, but when I pay $300 for a deep cleaning I want it clean - and I was very disappointed with the results. It was cleaner... but that's not what I paid for.) After they were gone we decided to go grocery shopping and on the way out I opened the oven to see if they'd gotten it clean.... sparks and flames lept up out of the side where the door attaches. I was scared and closed the door up. Hubby opened it again and there were flames again! (Scream) I went for the baking soda and the phone. We fluffed baking soda at the hole where the flames were still glimmering, and got them out of sight. 911 said to get out of the house - they were sending a rig.
As it turns out the professional cleaners had allowed some cleaning fluid into the hole, and that triggered the fire. (I'm still a bit scared - three days since.) The firemen checked for heat with their Thermal something or other and assured that there was no more fire there. The trouble is there are no replacements like it. My oven and stove top are period to this 50s house. I now have to buy a new one... We don't have that kind of money. I thought - no problem - there are places to buy a new oven and top all over the place - maybe $500 each. Guess again. You can't get an oven for less than $1500. (Scream again!) The professional is going to make this right, he said. We'll see. (He did a half-assed job cleaning...)

Back on the sane side of life the D4 is going well... and may even get done on time... if I don 't have another fire.  Here are the latest pictures.

As it is right now... still more blocks in the works.

Waiting for the resew after the disappearing cuts. Don't you love that print. The pieces are held on a piece of paper until I can get them resewn. There are two blocks here.

Waiting for placement.... maybe. Seems like we have plenty of orange and yellow already, so maybe not. (Those are water glasses... just so you know.)

Waiting for the disappearing cuts... and then the resew. Love that beige print, don't you? (You know I don't like brown, but it goes great here. I do love my avocation.)

Waiting to be squared up. This pile has some really wacky prints and stripes - they have to get into the quilt.
So you can see we are still in a big mess of blocks everywhere around the sewing room. Maybe by tonight I'll be ready to sew it together as a flimsy. If you see anything that should be moved, please let me know.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Hugs,
Terri

  1. omygosh, Terri--your whole house could have burned down! I think the cleaners should have to pay--but then I once got a tee shirt from my Dad when I was young that said "It isn't F A I R!!". I feel really bad for you two; we are not "youngsters" either and I totally empathize with the aches and daily pains--DH and I seem to go through a daily litany of "How's your back? How's your toe etc etc" Boy you didn't need this anxiety...
Hoping all goes well with finding (maybe a gently used stove??) and your Open House...
In the meantime, I love how your quilt is coming along--it will be gorgeous, but then, I really love all of your quilts...hugs and best Julierose

  2. O-M-G! Simply crazy! Hope the cleaners will set it all right - that's plaiin crazy! A least house wasn't burned down and you are uninjured! At least some good news, isn't it?

Actually you gave me an idea with your new quilt! It resembles so much of our traditional ornaments that I may post some of them just for fun, maybe it will give new ideas.

  3. I don't even know what to say that Ann and Julierose haven't....but how terrible...and frustrating...quilting is truly a stress relief right now. Thinking of you!

  4. Are you sure that isnt vodka in those water glasses? Because - honestly Terri - nobody would blame you after that incident with the oven. Too right- the cleaning company should make good on that - it was completely their fault. Failing that - would your house insurance cover it?

Loving the progress on the wedding quilt- it's lovely!

  5. Oh my! This is terrible! I'm so glad your house didn't burn down with you two in it ... Bless your heart. You could report the cleaning company to the Better Business Bureau if they don't make things right.
Changing the subject, your D4P is looking great!!

  6. How lucky that the fire didn't start while you were away! I hope you will get a new oven from the cleaners without any problems. The quilt looks great with more colours added.

  7. Oh my goodness...thankfully you checked the oven before you went out and you were able to get the fire under control before it could spread!!

You are using so many beautiful fabrics in the wedding quilt - they are going to love it!

  9. Hugs Terri! I wouldn't blame you if it was gin after the scare you had! So glad it wasn't even worse. The cleaning firm will have their own insurance to take care of it. Your blocks look gorgeous together. Your granddaughter will be so proud of it.

  10. That is so disappointing that the cleaning company did a poor job of cleaning, but then to think they didn't even know what they were doing with chemicals!! They had better pay!

  11. So sorry about the fire. Make sure that the cleaning company pays for all your costs, since they caused the fire. As for price of ovens, yes, my oven has been trying to go out for a few years now, and, it's a built in with an attached microwave oven. When it finally dies, I want to replace it with a double oven. I've been pricing them for a few years now. OUCH! I'm just hoping that I can keep this oven working for several more years, since I don't have the money for it, and won't any time soon. The D4P blocks are looking great. I use paper towels to keep my blocks in the correct order, too.

  12. That is unbelievable. I do hope you are fully reimbursed by that company.
