It's paper pieced and part of a "Backyard Birds" quilt I made for my son's birthday in 2009 (I think).  The pattern was from the book "365 Paper Piecing Patterns".  See.... not cute or funny. I like yours better, JR.

Some more of the new butterflies

I arranged some on the ironing board, but they wouldn't all fit.  Tried a new batch of fabrics from my stash. found my Fairy Frost fabrics... there is a green (Fairy Frost) winged one in this first picture with a red body and white background.

See the bird fabric here on the bottom of the above picture. I bought it for making birds... I have a box in my stash for fabrics that look like birds to me.  And the blue with lime green in it is left over from last year's H2H quilt. I paired it with oranges then  - looks good with an orange body and lime background.

I haven't squared them up yet... but you knew that.

Orange Fairy Frost body with  green speckled wings and yellow background. I bought a bunch of Fairy Frost for making birds from a gift certificate I got for Christmas one year from Sheila of  Sew Cook and Travel. Thanks again Sheila.

Some of my favorite fabrics are here in this batch.  I really love this orange with purple accents that is second to the last in the picture above (green body and dark purple background).  Top right in this picture is some Fairy Frost blue... You have to cut into it as some point - if you don't, your inheritor will get to use it. I really don't know who that might be.

Nothing else is going on here. I am suffering another bout of trouble with my sciatica, brought on when I blew out my right knee... climbing the stairs!  Who says exercise is good for you?

I have a few more I'll share when I have more done...

Still Making Butterflies

Showing 9 X 14 = 127  blocks and I've got one more to start the next batch... I'm not done. It's only 36" X 48" when sewn together.  Not big enough.

Some of my favorites -

I've been using mostly scraps so far, but now I'll be getting out the bigger pieces in my stash to make all the butterflies that I want to make and make them all different.  I'm still enjoying the process.

More Butterflies

I've got 91 sewn now, but only these are squared up.

Below are close ups that I especially like.  The layout will change, of course. You can't have same colors next to each other.... And a couple of them are just wrong... like the polka dot and pink butterfly with the pink background on the top row.  What was I thinking? 

I do like the leopard print, but the pink one next to it looks like a dumbbell.  Anyway, back to the cutting mat. (First I need some Tylenol!)

A New to Me Butterfly

I started out to make the kind I've seen all over the blogs, like here. I've wanted to try them for ages now.

 

I had trouble getting the background on correctly, so I made a paper piecing pattern.  You may notice I had a problem with that, too. Oh well, these are wonky ones.  I'll fix the pattern for the next ones.  I've been itching to make something paper pieced, you know me.

Stories to go with the H2H quilts shown on an earlier post

Sometimes I have a time trying to tell one quilt from the close-ups of it shown on other blogs... So on this blog I am sharing the stories of the quilts that I'm giving to the Hands to Help Comfort quilts challenge. I'll show the quilts again and the sordid truths about them. LOL

This one started out as a Squirrel Quilt...

You know how squirrel quilts can be... so exciting to start, so tedious to finish. I liked the color scheme from an ad in a magazine, and I love the white and muslin background pieces on other quilts I have seen, but just not the way I did it. 

This red and muslin quilt is Cherry Pie - my third quilt, and it's been in the UFO pile since the 90s.  It's huge, and I just don't feel like finishing it. There are a few blocks cut that I will send with to Victoria's in Canada... in case she needs to add to the part she cuts off of this one.

The next two may need to be sewn together to be big enough, but that should be easy. These are "made" fabric pieces I made a couple of summers ago. There are orphan blocks and paper pieced blocks included in each. Close up photos show those blocks.

 

 

And here is the baby quilt for Jack's Basket.  Some of my favorite multicolored fabrics with two sided "frames".  It's an easy quilt to make, and I made it for a friend to give to a grandchild.  I asked and asked for an address, but none was offered.  I have two other quilts for the other grandkids that aren't as yet finished. They will be donated somewhere when they are finished, too.

Don't you just love the spacey blue on the left and the rainbow "flames" next to it?  In honor of my nephew, Brandon, this one goes to Jack's Basket.

Squirrel Project

You know I've been working on some little airplanes for a baby quilt... well, I got a new pattern from Claudia Hasenbach .  She designs really great

I enjoyed making this one. 

We've got some -5 temps in the forecast for this week. Hope you all are keeping warm.

More Airplanes

This might be all the planes this boy baby quilt gets...

What I want to do is enclose that blue and white fabric on the ironing board in the foreground with planes... see if it turns out big enough. Paper is still on them, so there is that to remove, too.  Then how to quilt?  Sending this along to link up at Rainbow Scrap Challenge here.

Working for Boeing - No

I'm not working for Boeing, but I do have a bunch of red and blue airplanes paper pieced...Let's count the Red Ones for the current color at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  I should have more of them done by Saturday.

Finished in 2018

There wouldn't be much of a post here if I only showed finished quilts from 2018... You know me, I'm slow.  But I did finish some involved paper pieced blocks. Wanna see?

These 3 flag blocks were for Alicia's friend who passed.

 

 

 

 

 

This is one of a variety of small blocks made into mug rugs for my sister.

 

This quilt is now finished and ready to send - just need an address.

 

Working on the airplanes and circles now.  I don't know why, but I liked the patterns (paper pieced, don't ya know).

 

I also worked on a failed swan...just couldn't get the beak to work out - no picture either.

 

I did finish 3 quilts, and some of those paper pieced blocks took longer than the quilts.

 

So that was 2018.  No resolutions, no plans other than to do better.  I think I can manage that one, but I've set the bar pretty low.
