Stories to go with the H2H quilts shown on an earlier post

Sometimes I have a time trying to tell one quilt from the close-ups of it shown on other blogs... So on this blog I am sharing the stories of the quilts that I'm giving to the Hands to Help Comfort quilts challenge. I'll show the quilts again and the sordid truths about them. LOL

This one started out as a Squirrel Quilt...

You know how squirrel quilts can be... so exciting to start, so tedious to finish. I liked the color scheme from an ad in a magazine, and I love the white and muslin background pieces on other quilts I have seen, but just not the way I did it.

This red and muslin quilt is Cherry Pie - my third quilt, and it's been in the UFO pile since the 90s.  It's huge, and I just don't feel like finishing it. There are a few blocks cut that I will send with to Victoria's in Canada... in case she needs to add to the part she cuts off of this one.

The next two may need to be sewn together to be big enough, but that should be easy. These are "made" fabric pieces I made a couple of summers ago. There are orphan blocks and paper pieced blocks included in each. Close up photos show those blocks.

And here is the baby quilt for Jack's Basket.  Some of my favorite multicolored fabrics with two sided "frames".  It's an easy quilt to make, and I made it for a friend to give to a grandchild.  I asked and asked for an address, but none was offered.  I have two other quilts for the other grandkids that aren't as yet finished. They will be donated somewhere when they are finished, too.

Don't you just love the spacey blue on the left and the rainbow "flames" next to it?  In honor of my nephew, Brandon, this one goes to Jack's Basket.

Stories and close-up photos as promised. Shipping these tomorrow.

Terri

Looks Like a Road Map

Where am I going?

Maybe another view will help you....

Here's the other side of the map.  I've got 4 - 3" outer "sky" colored borders cut and ready as soon as I pull off the paper.
Now how to quilt it?

Leaving the paper peeling until   TV time tonight.

Terri

More Airplanes

This might be all the planes this boy baby quilt gets...

What I want to do is enclose that blue and white fabric on the ironing board in the foreground with planes... see if it turns out big enough. Paper is still on them, so there is that to remove, too.  Then how to quilt?  Sending this along to link up at Rainbow Scrap Challenge here.

Happy Weekend!

Working on Two New Quilts

While looking over the Quilters Cache website I found some quilts I'd like to make in the Inspiration section.  I was very pleased to find that they were easy paper piecing.  Exhibit A

I've been making one plane and 2 "circle" parts each day. The airplanes may be a baby quilt someday... (I have 9 grandkids, some of them are adults so I will be having great grands again soon. I have one now.) The circles are mostly from scraps, and I'm hoping they will look good enough for a quilt for my favorite charity - Hands 2 Help.
Enjoying an energy boost from somewhere, so I'm actually getting some things done. (It feels good.)

It's Friiiiiiday!  Have a wonderful weekend.

Terri

Friday Finish Baby Quilt

I just quilted in the ditch of the blocks. Here is the backing fabric with the blue binding,  I had to hand sew the binding... I forgot to sew it onto the back first and then sew it onto the front with the sewing machine.....!  Next time I'll remember, I hope.

I love the binding fabric. It goes quite well with this little quilt.

So I'm done, and now I need an address to send it off.

Happy Weekend to you all,
Hugs,
Terri

Finally a Finished Flimsy

I've been working on this baby quilt for a while now. I showed it last time. You commenters convinced me to rearrange the blocks. I did and I like this arrangement better. Thank you so much.

Before:

After:
I like this better... it looks more organized.  Do you think it needs a border?  It's 35 X 42 now.

While I'm working on it, it seemed  like a group of Rorschach tests . What do you make of the  block below?

I think it represents flames on the planet Mars.  What do you think?

So it's only Tuesday... Hump day tomorrow. Doesn't mean a thing to me though. I'm retired.  Have a great rest of your week.

Bright Baby Quilt

Blocks are all done, and pinned into temporary placement.  I'll be looking for something I don't like about it... If you see something amiss, let me know.

Used some of my favorite prints. It didn't hurt that I found the 5" blocks already cut and hiding in my stash.  I was probably planning another Jazzy Snowball. I like to make those.  I have made one like this before (with the partial borders). Give me a minute to look up a picture .....

Here it is.... an "I Spy" made with the same "pattern" from out of my head.  I found it under Project Linus.  I don't know when I made it, but I blogged about it  July 31, 2010. Seems like a lifetime ago.

So thanks for stopping in. It's Friday tomorrow, so have a lovely weekend.

Family Thanksgiving - so much fun

We went to my sister's for Thanksgiving.  Thank you Barb and Sons. (She was packing to move on Friday.) Dinner was mostly made by Ben, her middle son (seen in the foreground, next is the youngest son Joe, the little guy is Ben's girlfriend's son, and then my sis).  The blonde in black is Kelly, Rob's new bride.

On the bottom right my hubby showing his best side...LOL
Barb and her 3 sons.  Ben in the back, Joe is the youngest, and in the front is Rob. He is the oldest.

Barb and I. - I already miss her.  She's moved to Florida.  I need your address, girl..

These are some blocks I made to start a baby (1 year old) quilt.  I found the 5" wild print blocks in my stash, so they work great with 2 -  2"border strips.  I've got a bunch more made, but I'm not going to show them all so soon. I'll show some more tomorrow.

We had rain this morning, snow is falling now.

Hope you had fun this weekend.

Terri

New Great Grandboy quilt finished

Let's see if I remember how to do this.

I guess I do. Granddaughter chose the colors and most of the fabrics. I did "straight" stitch in the ditch one way, and a narrow wobble across that. I made the label on the computer. I hope it lasts.
Broc Edward William Meyers was born on the 14th. I'll try to figure out how to put a picture up here.

I did also finish the Outlander series of 8 books. Luckily it had a wonderfully happy ending.

So now I've got time to sew again. I've got 2 granddaughter's that will probably wed this year. Working on the one quilt for a year already - but not very much.

Now I'm off to see what you all have been doing in my absence.

Hugs,
Terri

Remember This?

This week I'm working on my newest Grandgirl;s baby quilt. She turns 1 early next month, and this is still a flimsy... for over a year! I started it when I knew she'd be a she.

I'm sandwiching on the dining room table - appropriate? I think so.  I'm using pins. See them at the upper right. Question: Do you put them in a line?  or this way and that? I'm putting them in the little secondary squares of green. I'm thinking I'll wavy line quilt down the legs of the Xs, right through the corners. It'll work great. The trouble  comes when I come upon an O. I'll have to come up with something else for the

Paper Piecing Tutorial Link, Wonky Stars and a Flimsy at last!

First I want you to know about the Paper Piecing Tutorial. Jen O. has a video on her blog today that is very informative. I've paper pieced for over 5 years now, and I learned lots. Check it out at Sewhooked.com

Sorry it's been a while since I posted last. Here's what I've been doing. (Besides cleaning and primping for home showings.  We did sell the house once, but it fell through once we all figured out the timing.  So now we start over.)

For the Rainbow Scrap Challenge: Just one more block...

And it is finally a flimsy for the new grandgirl to be. (Wouldn't it be a surprise if the doctor missed something and she is a he? I am a perverse granny.) Still some paper to pull - just the little crumbs that don't come straight off the first time. It really looks more colorful here even though it's a fuzzy photo. I tried to keep it low grade value wise.

So I'm going to link up to the Rainbow Scrap Challenge tomorrow, and to Sarah's Whoop Whoop today. (Links are in the side panel.) Come on by and see what others have been working on.

Have a wonderful weekend.
Hugs,
Terri

Making Kisses

This title reminds me of my daughter at about 3 years old. She would wiggle her lips around and then give a kiss... she had to make one first... She was a character right from the beginning. So in memory of my darling daughter we will make some kisses for the niece she will never know.

Start with a pattern you can get for free at:
QuiltMaker Magazine

Theirs is for 6" blocks and I made mine smaller and made up a Master sheet so I could make copies of it and save some paper.

Cut your copies into single blades (1/2 of a kiss).

Start by choosing your colors and pinning on #1. (#2, 3 and 5 are background pieces. #1 and 4 are kiss parts.) I'm using pink or white for the kiss parts.
(Make sure the #1 piece is pretty side out on the unprinted side.)

Place the #2 piece, (green and white print) face up, and leaving enough seam allowance. Set your machine for small stitches. (On mine I use 15 stitches to the inch.) Now back stitch at beginning, sew along the line, then back stitch at the end of the seam. Easy-Peasy.

Seam sewn - trim seam allowance to 1/4". (I use a scissors - and eyeball it. It's much faster that way.)

Then press the seam (to set your stitches) and flip the #2 piece and press again

Now trim off the strip of #2 fabric... Never trim until it is flipped.

I make the two pieces at one time... it's faster that way.

Now the #3 piece. Sewn, seam allowance trimmed, pressed, flipped and pressed again. I usually put a pin in this tail (top left) but I didn't show that part on a picture.

Now sewing on #4.  Here's that pin. .. to hold that tail from floppy around.

When your two halves are done you can make hugs, or turn the pieces around and....

make a kiss.

Here's our block on the design wall... just pinned - not yet sewn together. I might want to mix them up a bit before I sew.

(27 more blocks - 54 more blades to go)

The block just made is the lower left.

Linking up to Confessions of a Fabric Addict... see the sidebar for the location.

Next time I'll show my technique for sewing the blocks together.

Hugs, (and kisses)
Terri

More XXXs

I need 9 X 9 to get a crib sort of size.... 81 blocks. Doesn't sound like much, but when it takes more than 10 minutes each - that's at top speed, which I just can't keep up -  Well, I figured I'd better get to the grind stone...... and yet a nap sounds so lovely.  We're still under the weather here. So not much sewing getting done.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. We got a call from our son in Alaska, and got to talk to the whole family!  That was really special to us.  Thank you.

Now on to New Year's!  Anybody making a Resolution List yet?  (I need new resolutions... seems the ones I usually go for are just not meant to happen. LOL)  What's your most unusual resolution?

Hugs,
Terri
