Hexie Tip

Guess what I found under a bunch of scraps.... New fabrics I bought at Creative Quilter in West Duluth Minnesota. She was getting ready for a shop hop, and there wasn't much of either of these on the bolts, so I got mine quick. I intended to come back and do the shop hop, and I would have in the olden days when we made money. Now we live on a fixed income, so ....No Shop Hops.

 The fabric on the left is variegated! A whole yard of different colors in that feather print.

Here's the Hexie Tip I came up with last night.  I was having so much trouble holding the fabric, plastic template and the needle all at once while folding down the ends.... how did I ever do that before?  Then I thought of my clips!  Just right to hold it all folded while I tack the little bugger.  Works for me.  (I don't know what I'm making with them. I just needed a project while watching TV... otherwise I eat.  On the Slimfast diet... I've lost a few pounds, but I'm so hungry....

This is it! A year of posts!

This is post #365... I've posted a year's worth! (It's taken me 4 years to get here.) Actually, I've been blogging since July 30, 2010. Seems I missed my Blogoversary.  This time I want to show you a finish, a new granddog, and make an announcement, all in this  groundbreaking  monumental special post. Let's get started, shall we?

Here's the finish

Can you tell I'm quite proud of it? It's only a dolly quilt, made for the Mrs. Claus charity run by Debbie at Stitchin' Therapy. (I still need your address, Debbie.) It took me forever, mostly because I kept putting it off. I really didn't have a plan when I started. Finally I sewed the hexie flimsy to a white on white print and quilted around the flowers. The binding is the same as the back. Technically, it isn't the best job. I do love the colors, especially for a dolly quilt, and I'm just glad to have a finish after such a long dry period. You know what I mean.

Bella (I think) is 16 weeks old, a golden lab. Such a pretty granddog. I hope this picture shows up. I just copied it off of my DIL's Facebook page.

More Paper Pieced Hexies aaaaand

I've made a bunch more... I'm going to have to open some boxes or go shopping soon. I really don't like the same ones to show up this often. I am liking it so far.

I plan a one inch white strip between the rows.

 I'm using white on white prints for the white... Genius, don't you think so? It's something extra to discover.

And.....

Thanks to Cheryl, I got mine!  Harry Potter postage stamps! We got two sets - one to share and one to keep.  They just came out, so get yours soon.

Dolly Quilt & Home for Sale

Hi Friends,
I'm getting the hexie dolly quilt ready to quilt.

I don't usually put a quilt on the table to pin or baste, but this time it's small enough. (See my "bouquet" of sticks from a palm where the seeds hung?  I feel a little like Morticia showing these. Remember on the TV show, how she used to cut off the roses and save the thorny stems? Love that!)

Hexie Friday

I have been doing a little hand sewing at night. From a distance I love how they look, but the hand stitches don't look good to me closer up. Maybe when I quilt it I can disguise the uglies.

I've gotten out a UFO I started before the newest grandguy was born, and figured I'd give him the I Spy for his first birthday (coming up in Aug.).  Remember this?

I'm quilting around the small squares - the pictures - so it's taking forever to shove the quilt through the hole of the machine 4 times for each square. I hope I remember this next time I quilt. I just don't seem to learn my lessons well.

And in the evenings I'm hand sewing hexie flowers for a dolly quilt for Get Your Mrs. Claus On. (See the button on the sidebar.)  I have to do something in the evenings or I fall asleep!

 

 

I also want to share a picture - well, 2 really - of my Mimosa Tree blooming now. It is not only beautiful, but smells like heaven - sweet, but not choakingly, and the cutest pink puffball blossoms.

9th Hexie and all

 

I've decided on a dolly quilt for the Mrs. Claus Charity - see the side bar. I think it's 12" X 15" but I'll have to look that up. I might try to fold the sides to the back of the quilt as part of the backing. I get these hair brained ideas sometimes. Has anybody ever done something like that?

 

Saw a blog today offering a Paper Piecing Party... I am sew in for that!  It's at Quiet Play if you are interested. I've been feeling the need to PP.

7 hexies

These are it for today. I've got some prep work done this afternoon, so there should be enough for the 8th grand, and to decorate my pink shirt.  What do you think? A brag shirt, or a dolly quilt? I am enjoying the colors and the technique... maybe both?  (Can you tell I turned the photo on its side?)

Me too, I finished a 3rd!

It's not really a competition, but Sophie and I are both making hexie based projects, and we are both on our 3rd unit. She is making stars and I am making flowers for Grandmother's Flower Garden...(I am a Grandma, so it's okay.)

She shared some tips...  I've been pinning my folds first. Seems better that way, and the sides come out more even.  She is using paper, and I am using some heat proof  templates that I bought from JoAnn's. Even though they are quite stiff they pop out easily. (Notice I'm not being very neat about the seam allowances.

And on another note: The Easter Cactus just started blooming.  I like this one I got from a friend in the mid 70s. (Yes girls, I am that old.)

An Evening Project & Easter Cactus Blooms

Hello Dear Friends,
Good to see you.  I always like company! Would you like a cuppa? I'm having Echinacea Complete Care by Celestial Seasonings... one of my favorite teas.

I've started a hand sewing project for the evenings. (Keeping my hands busy while watching TV with the Hubby helps me to stay awake, and I've noticed my hands don't swell so badly if I keep them moving in the evening.) Here are the pictures...

 Yup! It's hexies! One of the quilts on my QBL (Quilting Bucket List) is a Grandmother's Flower Garden. My Grandma made one for each of her grandkids. Mine was a gift at my wedding shower along with another quilt. (I'll show it off one of these days.)  I thought I could make one for my grands, too. This one is pink flowers with yellow centers and greens all around. On the right is the first cutting, and sewing, below the second set.

 

 

Here's the first flower done.

 
I know it takes a long time.  I should have started these when they were babies.  I have 8 grands... I wonder if I can stay interested in this process for 8 quilts. Luckily Mason, #8, is only 8 months old.


 And this is my Easter Cactus - finally it's blooming.  I guess with Easter coming so early it got confused.
