Bright Baby Quilt

Blocks are all done, and pinned into temporary placement.  I'll be looking for something I don't like about it... If you see something amiss, let me know.

Used some of my favorite prints. It didn't hurt that I found the 5" blocks already cut and hiding in my stash.  I was probably planning another Jazzy Snowball. I like to make those.  I have made one like this before (with the partial borders). Give me a minute to look up a picture .....

Here it is.... an "I Spy" made with the same "pattern" from out of my head.  I found it under Project Linus.  I don't know when I made it, but I blogged about it  July 31, 2010. Seems like a lifetime ago.

Working on Two Charity Challenges!

Hello Friends,
We are getting ready for Easter. Our son, daughter in law and newest grandson are coming over!!!!  We're going to have porcupine meatballs, baked potatoes and carrots (in honor of the bunny).  Maybe we'll partake on the patio...  rain is predicted... but you know how the weatherman is usually wrong.

Anyway, I have the flimsy done for the palms quilt I've been working on.  I'd show it off, but it needs ironing. I do have some pictures to share.

Sneak peek: one of my UFOs is going to be a quilt for the Hands 2 Help Charity Quilt Challenge (see the side bar for the beam over button - quilts donated all go to charity. (Join in by Sat. (tomorrow) to get in on the giveaway!) It is my favorite charity! They give quilts to a wide range of people... I like that.)  Here's a sampling of my UFO.

I've had it squirreled away for almost a decade. Time to make it into something!

And the Fandom in Stitches Project of Doom Charity I thought I was too busy to join in will be getting at least 2 blocks. It's a Harry Potter thing, so you know I couldn't stay away. See the button at the right if you'd like to make a few blocks. One winner gets the blocks or a quilt, (unsure about that part) and the rest of the blocks are going into Project Linus quilts. That's a worthy charity, too.

So far I've made one cauldron brewing Felix Felicis (the good luck potion). The other pattern will be Hedwig. She's going to be hard to make,  the background has to be white and she is white. Dilemma!

an easy starter pattern

It's really easy. The Red Herring Paper Pieced Pattern 2012 is the one I'm using - see the blocks above on my banner.

Quiet Play pattern for Red Herring

I'm still enjoying the sewing, and usually by now I've gotten sick of the pattern. On this pattern make sure that there is more than enough fabric sticking out on the "up" side of the addition as you start to sew. The down side has the extra piece to add as the mid rib so you will put enough there.

More paper pieced blocks and quilts that I've made, that aren't Harry Potter:

 

This (above) was a hand drawn paper pieced pattern, but there are lots like it around. Just draw a small square, put a triangle on one point for the center, and background triangles on the three other sides. It takes 4 squares to finish one flower. Then I made strips of the background (white) between them all. "Piano Key" border in the same colors. This one went to Project Linus.

Above is a modified butterfly from 365 Foundation Quilt Blocks, by Linda Causee. It's a very busy pattern, but I just did the wings as one piece each. I also made it smaller than the pattern in the book. This block went to Victoria of Bumble Beans. I signed name and locale as the antennae.

This is the Hugs and Kisses quilt nearly finished. (I made blue hugs and kisses to go around the edge, and have it quilted, but I bogged down at tying the thread ends. This pattern is from either Quilter's Newsletter or QuiltMaker. It is slated for the Hubby for his birthday the end of the month - turning the big 70.

 

 I also see the stars and trees at the left. Those are from QuiltMaker, too, I think. I started that wall hanging for my daughter, but then she said she was so tired of seeing pink everywhere...

I'm going to donate the blocks, I think. It's hard to see them now.

Gandalf. There is a series of blocks about the book, the Hobbit. (There and Back Again (free) patterns from Fandom in Stitches .) I would have made the whole bunch, but block #2 got me. I started out with a wood grain fabric for the coat rack, then realized it would be too hard to handle the "way" of the grain, and there was something else that took priority at the time. Gandalf is still hanging on the design wall.

This is a pattern I modified from feathered friends by Jette Norregaard Nielsen. I used the Waxwing pattern and a bird identification book to get the Cardinal I wanted. (They have a similar attitude on the branch, and they are both crested. I had to make quite a few easier adjustments, as well.) This one went to the "Get Your Mrs. Claus On" charity, little dolly blankets for little girls at Christmas. It's run by .Debbie at Stitchin' Therapy. The blankees go with a cradle made by some very talented and generous gents.

 

So the Hubby wants the computer now... we really should get a second one.

OMG!

This is the first time I'm blogging since Blogger changed... I'd have bet the input screen couldn't get any smaller than the old one... Wrong! 

Anyway, I finished my H2H and the quilt for the Project Linus Open House.  Here are the pictures...

H2H - button on the side panel - 2 charities, mine will go to the cancer one.

Project Linus donation for the Open House - make a quilt with your favorite color and any of it's tints or shades. Voila!

I really hate making things with a deadline, but I'm glad I made them, and they are gone on their way tomorrow.  And so am I. The Hobby and I are off to AK (that's Alaska) tomorrow. Our granddaughter, Alyssa, will be the first of the grands to graduate!  So we will be there with bells on! We are so proud. And we  are visiting our son and family for a week. Our first time to AK.  I can't wait.

So you are on your own for a week. (But I know you will be alright - after all, you were alright last week without me.)  I hope we will have some wonderful pictures to share with you then.

Show and Tell

Hi Friends!


I've been busy...

Do you notice that this picture is upside down?  Just keeping you on your toes!

This is the quilt for H2H (see the button in the side bar). I have the flimsy done...

and this is the flimsy done for the Project Linus Open House Challenge.  Am I done? Do I need borders on either of these? I'm thinking I'll need to quickly sew the strip quilt that is underneath first and take down the little triangles quilt so I can use my design wall to baste the two challenge quilts. Should have  been working when I was playing computer games. Now I'm up against two deadlines.

Let's see if I can finish them on time. Pink and Red needs to be done by May 4 and May 27 for the H2H quilt.  I'd better get back to work!!!!

For those of you praying for my Chrissy - Thank you and please keep up the good work.  She is back to chemo again. She had the first round last Tues. and is feeling better from that, but the side effects hit her already on this first time, and well, lets just say they are awful. The courage it takes to do this again is phenomenal, IMO!  I could not admire her more.

Chrissy is getting better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

=^..^= is what I learned today. I don't remember where I saw it, but it was on one of the blogs I follow, and I just had to try it myself.  Aren't you proud that you stopped here.

My Chrissy is getting better and better. She can walk the stairs to take a shower, but on the way down (after the trip up, and a shower) she needs a nap... Understandable after what she's been through. She has now added a few easy (hopefully) chores, and can do some things around the house. I am always amazed by that woman.

I've only sewn a few rows on my pink and red. Needs to be done sometime in April for the Project Linus Open house.

Notice I have 3 quilts now -overlapped - on my design wall. Can you see them all?

A better view of the laziness.

Here's the bunnies I made to be puppets for my kids and grandkid cards... I just ran out of interest in them. I threw them all into a project box... I hope they aren't doing any math...

The grey ones were to be "grey hares" given  to the kids who gave me so many of them...

and the white ones were for the grandkids... but they are all too old for finger puppets now, and pretty much only interested in computer games and boys.... What's a granny to do?

 I just don't like how the bunnies turned out, so I'm not giving them out.

We have had a turn in fortunes, and the car needs fixing... $400 to the radiator. (Never talk about money in front of your car... We got our tax return, and the car must have known.) It'll be more troubles after that. We've had it a long time, and it is a 2004 model. We've just been lucky to this point that nothing major has come up until now.  For the weekend we are prisoners in our house.  We'll probably walk up to the Taco Bell for a special treat for our Easter Dinner. Can't get the car into the shop until Monday morning. C'est la Vie!

The rest of the story... and some flowers.

Thank you for all your prayers for my Chrissy. She is in her own room now, and I talked with her last night, and she is very quiet, subdued by the pain meds, but doing really well - considering what they extracted.  Her spirits are high, and she is very thankful for all the prayers she has been getting. Now she rests in the hospital for at least a week. The first week is critical for the liver to rebuild. Her goal, she said, was to be able to walk to the bathroom herself, today. A lofty goal, I'd say. But I know she will get there.  Please keep her in your prayers, at least for a few more days....

Now my afore mentioned tutorial to put paper pieced blocks together. The first two blocks for my H2H quilt.

I left the backing papers on so I could

face them together - pretty side to pretty side, and pin through...

sorry about the fuzziness... pin through...straight through both ends, and the center... then with different pins - pin next to the through pins. Be careful not to distort the straightness of the straight through pins. Remove the straight through pins.

Now sew along the seam line to join the two blocks.

 Rip off the paper on the seam allowance only... you need the paper for the next block additions. Folding the paper at the stitches makes it easier to rip.

I use the seam ripper to help loosen the stubborn little pieces... careful not to rip out the stitches.

And Voila! Two as one. A successful marriage. (What is it when you add the next block? Hee Hee) This method assures that you will have the right amount of seam allowance, points are easy to match, etc. (Notice the ends of the seams do not... I never cut the 1/4 inch. I have a shaky hand, and sometimes ruin the 1/4.... now you know the secret!)

Not to change the subject or anything, but my tiny orchid blossomed!!!!! It has the most wonderful scent. Most orchids do not have a scent. I'm sorry that I can't tell you what kind it is.

 Earlier this week I drafted a paper piecing pattern for my friend, Sheila from Sew, Cook and Travel. I hope she shares her blocks today, so I can see what she did. You've gotta see her quilts! So colorful and cheery.

Here's what I did with the pattern. The whole quilt will be red, my "favorite color and it's tints and shades" for the Project Linus Open House at our leaders home in May. She usually sets us to some challenge for a quilt to show at the Open House. (This time there shouldn't be so many brown quilts... please!)

And finally, for you spring challenged, the snowdrops blooming in my front/side yard... under the birch trees. (I think the birch were planted to represent each of the family previous to us. One, sadly, has died now. There are still 6.)

So that concludes our visit, and the tutorial.  Hope all is well with you and yours. Which reminds me to beg you to continue to pray for my Chrissy. There are still miracles needed!

Back to normal! A WIP and another Fawkes...

Welcome to my spot in blogland...   Ahhh, I still have one.

So far I have the pieces cut and hanging on the design wall - (please pardon the lumpy look, but the little triangles are still pinned there under the "jelly roll" strips.
Here's the picture of my WIP:

As you can see there are a few sewed together on the right - sorry about the sun spots. (We are having the prettiest winter we have ever had since I've lived in CA since Dec. 1979.  We've had but mist since Oct, and we really need the rain.) I have incorporated a bunch of my stash in the classic blue and yellow-orange colors... and I've been influenced by an  esteemed colleague . I like the cheery fabrics she buys and uses and I think you will, too. I did buy a few fabrics I've liked that she uses.

Below find the latest Fawkes.. the only one at my house currently. (If you are new to this blog, you might not know that you can find Harry Potter (and other genre) paper piecing patterns for free at Fandom in Stitches (one of my favorite blog spots) who today is showing a cardinal... If you follow this blog you will find that Veeeery Interesting. It isn't my cardinal.... I want that very clear... I have not trouble with her version! It isn't my version. It's just funny how life works out.

Anyway, heeeeere's Fawkes, again. I like the background of this one. Fawkes in the cave, I guess.

Sorry I didn't crop this picture, but I don't have software for cropping any more. New computer. The old one had a "fix it" button - all "kina" ways to change your photo, and I don't have that now.  Tonight I'm going to tackle the "Knight Bus" from the Fandom in Stitches collection of HP patterns. (You can use them personally or for a charity project, but not for sale items.) I don't know what to do with the blocks I'm making, but I enjoy the making.  If you go over there to FiS, you can find the cardinal, there are patterns for SiFy and Animation and Vampire subjects as well as HP and some I don't remember. Today's cardinal is going into the Sports heading.  Have fun. If you have any questions about paper piecing, Jennifer has directions, too. And you can always ask me. I've done a bunch of that and I'd love to help you out.

A tiny Ginkgo, old car, a finish, next one up

Hi Friends,
Glad you could stop by.  I've got a pretty mixed bag for you today. Lets get started with some pictures, shall we?
Let's start with the finish.  I've finally got the little baby quilt done for Project Linus Open House.
It's 31x37 1/2 inches.

These are 2 cars at the old car show we stumbled upon this weekend. I think they look like us talking at the same time. (We really aren't as old as the cars, but today I do feel that old.  Must be some weather coming!)

Here is the Baby Ginkgo!  I am so proud.

An here is an aerial view. Cute, huh.

Now that I'm done with the quilt.  I'm thinking of making one like this.  This is a Kisses and Hugs quilt.  The picture is from QuiltMaker Magazine, Jan/Feb 2004. It's made with a paper piecing pattern that looks really easy, and I'm going to use a polka dot for the background.

I have a tutorial on binding coming up next time.  I started in the middle, and have to go back to the beginning and take some pictures for you. I've figured out how not to have a bulky ending... maybe you all know how to do this already, but I'm going to show it anyway.
