And we are Finished!

Here's the final pictures of the Grandgirl's Wedding Quilt.

I used clips to sew down the binding on the front.  Worked wonderfully!  (A tip: fold the mitered corner in from the unsewn side. That way you have a smooth sew down in the corner. First corner was difficult, until I figured it out.)  If I finished more often maybe I'd remember these things... as is I have to learn new things every time.

 

Here's the label with the "I love you" symbols... Mine has a green thumb, and his...

has a purple thumb. (He's quite accident prone.)

So that's that. It'll be carry on luggage tomorrow, but I'm not publishing this until she sees the quilt, so it'll be confusing as to when. Today is the 17th, and the funny thing is that she is being married right now... as I finished up the quilt. (Her religion has a special ceremony at the Temple called Sealing. We weren't invited for that.) Talk about 11th hour. I hope I learned to whip my ponies and keep on keeping on to finish things. I'm tired of that 11 hour thing.

 

 

 

Taking along a little paper piecing to work while I'm there. (Yes, you can hand sew them.)  I want to make some pot holders - again with some visual puns.

New appliances and binding on half way, Hurray!

You know the story - the house cleaners tried to burn down my house... (details here)  The owner of the professional house cleaner company tried to renege.  What a jerk!  Our insurance company paid, and has a legal way of getting his insurance to pay them back. He won't like it, but that's how it's going to go. And here is the new range and oven. I used the oven twice now, and it's working nicely. The range gets used everyday and works fine.  So someone who buys my house will get  a nice new set. (God can use evil for good... one of the Bible verses I've been able to remember over the years.)

Oven has buttons - I'm used to knobs, so there is a learning curve. I'm still reading the volumes of paper. They had to build in the hole a bit, so there is some painting to do yet. "It'll get done" he says.

Binding is on - half way. I sewed it onto the back side, and will machine it onto the front. I've done that once before, and it works really well with the walking foot attached. (Those are straight diagonal lines with a wavy diagonal between them... the quilting. I'm going to practice some free motion on the charity quilts that are waiting for quilting. See how that works. I'd really like to be able to stipple. We all have goals in life, don't we.)

Working on the label, and binding

Got the picture pun part of the label done... I'll show that off once Grandgirl has seen the quilt. That's really the only part that is going to be a surprise to her. (I'm so pleased and happy to say that she follows and actually reads my Blog!!! Who woulda thunk it?)

Here are some shots of the mistook I made...

 While quilting, I ran off the end of the backing - it was hard to center when you can't even stand up straight. Anywho, I fixed the problem in the next picture and continued to quilt. (That is the very excellent metal box that came with tea from another Grandgirl, Emmy. I like to call her Emmy because I think she will earn one someday. I'm her Grammy - not going to happen for me.)

 

Only a quilter will know a problem was fixed here.

This is the binding made and ready to sew on.  Teal or aqua (what is the difference between the two? I need to get a big box of crayons - MMMMM - that new crayon smell.) with gold flecks.

This is the pile of fabrics I used on the two paper pieced pun parts of the label.

 

Oh, and the MRI said I had a cyst rubbing on a nerve coming out of my lower back. That little bit of stuff has been causing all this pain. Amazing. I go to the Back Doctors a couple of days after we get back from the wedding.... Looking forward to that.

And this is ....

A design wall at rest...

So the D4P is a flimsy at last! (ARB, that means the top is done.) Shopping for the backing tomorrow. Hubby doesn't like the fabric that I chose for the backing. . . and I have to admit that it's too dark to go with the white of the flimsy. I have experience with backings showing through white bunnies, and I had to remake the quilt. We'll be looking for a light color. Anybody have any quilting ideas? I only have a walking foot, so straight lines.  Think I'll go make the label. I have a paper pieced idea.

F.I.R.E.

We had a fire at our house this week. You won't believe where it came from.

Remember we are old - having trouble walking, even sitting here is PAINful. And we are trying to sell our home.  So we hired a professional cleaning company to come clean our house for an open house. (I don't know about you, but when I pay $300 for a deep cleaning I want it clean - and I was very disappointed with the results. It was cleaner... but that's not what I paid for.) After they were gone we decided to go grocery shopping and on the way out I opened the oven to see if they'd gotten it clean.... sparks and flames lept up out of the side where the door attaches. I was scared and closed the door up. Hubby opened it again and there were flames again! (Scream) I went for the baking soda and the phone. We fluffed baking soda at the hole where the flames were still glimmering, and got them out of sight. 911 said to get out of the house - they were sending a rig. 
As it turns out the professional cleaners had allowed some cleaning fluid into the hole, and that triggered the fire. (I'm still a bit scared - three days since.) The firemen checked for heat with their Thermal something or other and assured that there was no more fire there. The trouble is there are no replacements like it. My oven and stove top are period to this 50s house. I now have to buy a new one... We don't have that kind of money. I thought - no problem - there are places to buy a new oven and top all over the place - maybe $500 each. Guess again. You can't get an oven for less than $1500. (Scream again!) The professional is going to make this right, he said. We'll see. (He did a half-assed job cleaning...)

Back on the sane side of life the D4 is going well... and may even get done on time... if I don 't have another fire.  Here are the latest pictures.

 As it is right now... still more blocks in the works.

 Waiting for the resew after the disappearing cuts. Don't you love that print. The pieces are held on a piece of paper until I can get them resewn. There are two blocks here.

 Waiting for placement.... maybe. Seems like we have plenty of orange and yellow already, so maybe not. (Those are water glasses... just so you know.)

 Waiting for the disappearing cuts... and then the resew. Love that beige print, don't you? (You know I don't like brown, but it goes great here. I do love my avocation.)

Waiting to be squared up. This pile has some really wacky prints and stripes - they have to get into the quilt.
So you can see we are still in a big mess of blocks everywhere around the sewing room. Maybe by tonight I'll be ready to sew it together as a flimsy. If you see anything that should be moved, please let me know.

Greens, etcetera, on the Grandgirl Wedding Quilt

Remember last week when I miss cut one of the blocks?

The top right is the remake. Lucky I had more of the two fabrics. The position of these will be changed. There is a whole color category that we missed! Orange and yellow!!! Can't leave them out.

 

Below is another newer green one...

 I'm short of time making this quilt. (Changing your mind a bunch of times will do that.) So my hubby says "I'll help you any way that I can...."  (Isn't that romantic! At my age it is!) He wants to cut with the rotary cutter.  Sorry Honey, you are too klutzy. I could see lots of red in the quilt, if he was allowed to cut. I've been having him choose colors that go together... LOL! (He's always good as comic relief.)  At least he is picking fabric out of the boxes. He says he's trying - and that is true, but just not the definition he's thinking. There are maybe three combos that he's put together.
I've asked him to cut some chained pieces apart to save me time. He is so meticulous .... it takes him forever. I've had him place blocks on the wall, but he can't seem to get the "light next to dark" rule. I've made some changes there, too.  The best help he has been, is doing the laundry, cooking and dishes. That does save me lots of time.  Thank you Honey!

And sew it goes. There are some more blocks off screen, so we are about half way making the blocks.(8" unfinished) Who knows, it might turn out to be an anniversary gift.

Monday - Storage Wall

I really have no right to call my design wall a "design" wall. Right now it is just for storage of the blocks I'm making for #1 Grandgirl's wedding quilt. Here's what I'm storing so far.

This close up was to show how dark that purple one really is... the photo is lots brighter than what I see in the sewing room. I need to keep that in mind.

There was also a tragic loss. One of my favorite blocks got an extra cut last night. (Sniff) I hope I have some of that same fabric left (and can find it again). I made the 1" cut from the middle instead of the 3-1/8" cut for the clean up.... It might become a pot holder!

So off to check in at Design Wall Monday... come on by and see what others were doing this weekend.
