Christmas Gift Opened - Love it!

It came in the mail, so I opened it...

From my sister, Barbara, (She always gives me Harry Potter things.) a Hogwarts pop up book!!!! I love it, Barb. Thank you so much.

 These are only 3 of the pages, made to open out all at one time.  There are two other pages that I will show at another time.

The plant is now dubbed the "Whomping Willow".  It's actually a pomegranate that has lived there since we moved here because sunshine shows up there on occasion.
I'm still discovering new things about this gift.  You may be seeing more on this subject.  Tune in next time.

Extendable Ear Finished

Phew!  That was a hard one.  (Pattern from Fandom In Stitches/Harry Potter)
You can't tell from the front, but there are lots of minute pieces.  I like my choice of background.  Isn't that the quintessential wallpaper in the Black family home? 

 

So now that the Ear is finished I'm going to paper piece a water lily  from a new booklet my Sister brought me this week.  All kinds of flowers.  It'll be fun to work with some bright colors.

And we had guests from England this week. So nice to see Stephan and Allan again.  Allan is my hubby's brother. 

We had a grand time with them. 

We might get snow tomorrow!  I'm like a kid- I like snow.

Lots of Little Miracles

Here's a story of one of the smallest  miracles. 

So I'm working on a Harry Potter pattern, the Extendible Ear.  This is the last piece to make, and I've run out of the brown I was using for the shadow... (I should have known better.)  I have all but five pieces  done.

 Five more pieces from this little bit?

 Not going to happen. I need to find some more.

I looked amongst the stash- nothing.  I checked with the scraps that are separated by color - nothing. I dug out the potholders I was making for house warming gifts to my family - nothing.  I checked the big bin of snippets, the whole thing - nothing.  I still had two places to check.  The stand up bin next to the cutting table- way at the bottom...

These little pieces should get me through. 

I should be able to finish tomorrow.  I'll run it bye you when I do.

Finished Hagrid's Hut

I like how this one turned out.  On this version there is a thatched roof and a weedy lawn.

All four of the most recent makes.  Next up is the fairly new pattern for the Extendible Ears.  I just happened to find my flesh colored fabrics recently.

Sewing what I want!

You know I love Harry Potter...

Well, right now I haven't got a deadline to meet, so I'm making a few more Harry Potter blocks from Fandom In Stitches.  I like making them. Lately it seems I'm having trouble picking colors. I'm making the castle right now

 Only 2 more seams to sew.  Below, see what I mean about choosing fabrics?  I like the rocks, but it seems more like  a fabric for Hagrid's cottage. I love the sky I chose, magical. With the roof color it seems kind of dark, (it is night time).  I might have to retry this pattern with other colors.  What do you think?

 

It isn't the easiest pattern.  Making Hagrid's cottage next. Stop by and see.

Here's the Slug Finish

As promised

I usually like to make the subject of the paper pieced pattern a richer color than the background. You can hardly see his antennae. Maybe I should make this block again... I wanted the slug to be yellow like the Banana Slug encountered by my kids when they were at Bible Camp in the 80s in the Santa Cruz  mountains in CA.

The pattern is at Fandom In Stitches or at Eat Slugs in case you want to make one.  LOL

Made for Christmas Gift

I started this last year for my Sister-in-Law as a hostess gift for inviting us to Thanksgiving... It didn't get done. I made the 5 paper pieced Mimbulus Mimbletonias, but after that I was stumped as to what to do with them.  What colors to use, what quilting to add, and quite afraid my skills wouldn't make a good enough product. I gathered up the blocks and fabrics and set it all aside.  Tuesday I decided to finish it after remembering something my drawing teacher taught us... photographic renderings were for cameras. Art work is made by humans and while not perfect, brings more insight to the piece.

Here's the piece, a table runner.

These close-ups show the real colors. (The pattern comes from Fandom in Stitches the Harry Potter section. I've made many of them.  It's a great houseplant - no watering, no sunshine required.)

The binding is red roses, and brings out the MM flowers.  Hope she likes it.

Paper Piecing Again

Working on a table topper for a fellow Harry Potter fan. It'll be 5 Mimbulus Mimbletonias.

The red flowers with the green - it's going to look quite Christmassy.

Some Halloween Pictures and some quilt blocks

The candy is in the back (left) of this picture in a large plant pot.

 Kids took a plant if they wanted one. We had lots of different ones this year, but the most popular were the Pearl Plants made up by my friend, Paulette White.

 I had my new Hedwig (owl) from my sister, Barbara Zeidl hanging up and the Spell Book that howls and laughs and vibrates on the table where the kids could touch  it. More plants and some free seeds on the table, too.

 Lots of lighting this year, and webbing done by the Hubster = Harry Potter.

 

 Some pictures that turn into ghouls as you walk by (from the $1 store)...

and a tiny Hogwarts banner that I paper pieced.

 Here's the banner, a pumpkin and the mandrake I finished today... you can't see his beady little black eyes.  He was fun to make.

 

So that's it for Halloween this year. Now to start some more plants for next year.

The potion is Felix Felicis... you can tell by the rest of the book that it's about good luck. I don't know if there is such a book on the list, but I wanted to make it.

POD 17 and Spring Flowers

This is my interpretation of POD 17... a bag from the Weasley's store and a few magic books. (Hey, aren't all books magical?)

And now the flowers around my house in Vancouver, WA
This is a rose I brought from my house in CA.

I love that it's 2 tone. Inside of the petal is red, and the outside of the same petal is white. It has a tendency to long stems, too. Isn't it beautiful?

These are the Azaleas that were growing here when we arrived. I'd have liked the red colored ones... or those red rhododendrons (rhoddies) they have here. OMG I'll try to find a spot where I can take a picture of one. You won't believe the color!

 

Below is the "wild flower" that grows best in my yard. In CA we call it Loco Weed. It grows like crazy.

And that does it for today. Jennifer has already put out the next POD pattern, and if I have any chance to get it done in time I better get at it.  I want to make some butterflies for Saturday at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, too.  See you then.

POD 16 and magnolia

First a picture of the magnolia newly transplanted and loving the new space. See the new big leaves? and it has a new leaf bud forming again.

Here's my block... a bit blurry, but you get the idea. It took me 3 tries to get it to this point.

I started to make Arnold the Pygmy Puff and thought... HMMM. If this is Harry Potter's bookcase, Ginny's stuff would be there, too. It'd be her Pygmy Puff there. Now what color was it? So I checked with a Wikipedia site and found out that her's was purple. Okay, start over. And then I wanted to use the "history of flight" fabric for Harry's book on fixing broomsticks... Oh well. It's just so busy that the broom gets lost. Start over again.  But I like how the block turned out... just not how the picture looks.

 

Now on to some H2H quilting. Finally!

Week 14 - Elder Wand

This week we had a choice of three different wands to put on the book case. I chose the Elder Wand.  It was Harry's for a bit of time.
I made the picture larger this time so you could see the fabric I used for the wand. Doesn't it make the wand look old?

I made a Monster...

 Introducing the Monster Book of Monsters for the POD 13...

He's tricky to match up the fur, so in some places he has a cowlick.... You know monsters don't brush or comb, and if you notice they don't brush their teeth either. I love his fierce eyes. He's going to be guarding the sewing room for a while. That'll keep the mice away.
