Lumber Jacks - Me and Him

Lumber jacks have nothing on us oldies. He is 71 and I'll be 66 in a few weeks and we sawed down our dead avocados yesterday.  It's kind of heart breaking. I started those two from pits. One was 16 and the other probably 12 or 13. Just had to do it though. They froze badly early this winter.  Here are the pictures of the poor things.

He pulled with a rope, and I cut with our little electric chain saw.  (All those brown leaves are from being frozen. There were some green leaves, but trying to sell the house, these brown trees wouldn't be helping.) Did you notice that we missed the little rose and a new oak growing next to the trunk. We got the avocados to go right where we wanted them to go. No broken fence, no destruction of their house or ours. We figure we saved a thousand or so.

Afterwards I went back to this:

Sew and cut - not in that order.

Our Back Yard today

We were surprised to see our lilac blooming - today! It did bloom this spring, I guess it thought this was a second spring. (Not it's usual beautiful full cone shape, but fully scented!)

Some of the "dead" roses that my oldest son and I planted. He got them out of a dumpster at the construction site he was working at the time.

I like to call them tangerines, but they aren't the Honey kind. They are yummy! I picked 3 today - we will see if they are ready.

Grandson (from Florida) says these are Mandarin Oranges. They are a bit milder than the above.

Oranges - next 3 pictures - some are still green and others are almost there!

Now the Passion Flowers (a vine that starts on the neighbor's side and blooms on my side...LOL)

This Pecan was planted by my oldest son. Wish we could stay for the first nuts.

 Princess Dianna roses

My Lavender plant - grown from a little cutting... I've given away dozens to the neighbors.
And this Morning Glory given to me by a neighbor has been lots of Halloween plants, too. It grows wild, across the fence through the fence and along the ground where it can - up the roses, pine trees and lipstick vine on the other side of the fence... very opportunistic.

Don't want to forget this place.

Terri

Below is the auxiliary pink I bought for the next grandbaby quilt - they tell me it's a grandgirl!!!!!!

I also bought 2 pieces of grey for the b,w &g quilt, but it isn't washed or ironed yet.

No sewing, but I did make a bunch of new little plants for Halloween,.

Spearmint

Lavender

Rosemary

See my little Elm tree? Out of 11 planted this is the only one to survive 3 years. I'm keeping this one.

So we come to the bottom of this post.
Have a wonderful week.

Homemade Rabbit Foot Fern

For my "Baby" Sis - here known as Beany - a look at the Rabbit Foot Ferns in my possession.

First the newest member of the family - Cute, huh?

Another view

And this is "Mom".  The fuzzy parts are probably rhizomes... I put one into a little pot without cutting the root, and that's how I got Jr. after 2 years or so. Once there were fronds (leaves) I cut it off of the Mom. Below is another view of Mom.

I'm starting two more. I hope they grow faster. Below is the laundry cup that I used to put up next to the Mom and set a rhizome on the soil and then water to keep moist... until it has fronds.

The whole thing is on the top of my guest shower. I've got plants everywhere.

So it isn't tomorrow yet... two people won the giveaway! You will just have to wait for tomorrow to find out who.

Terri

Crazy Mail, Plants, Rainbow Challenge & I Spy in works

Look what came in the mail last week... addressed to me! I'm not at all into hunting. Fishing license it too expensive, and we have no gear.  Who got the idea to send this to me - a woman? LOL

***

We are doing our Halloween plants a little differently this year - we're digging up the squirrel trees (you might call them volunteers, but in our neighborhood none of these oaks are close enough to drop acorns in our yard... you know who is planting them) and we're planting them in "pots".
They really are beauties.  These are the oaks.

Sweet gums

and these are mostly Mimosa.
We've got 19 trees so far, but there are many more to dig up and pot. It's going to be mostly trees this year, and some indoor plants. (I have the kitchen window full of avocados at various degrees of sprouting.

 ***

Now on to something quilty:

I've been thinking about joining Soscrappy's Rainbow Challenge . I've been hacking around the sewing room looking for a pattern that would be easy and lend itself to the brighter colors. (That day I was lucky on 3 occasions.) found these blocks... leftovers from a quilt I made for Project Linus a long while ago.  I have these and some orange ones done already, too.

***
Next up: the I Spy for the next grand baby... This is the flimsy. Paper has been removed, and the Hubby found 2 blocks that need repair. (The #1 piece moved on the way to the sewing machine, I guess, and there were 2 holes!!! EEEEEEK and GASP!  I made new blocks, just like the other ones - easier than ripping the old blocks and resewing - now to set them in. It'll be okay. You'll see.

Some close ups...

Oh and I've started to cut blocks for the Tetris game.  Click on the side bar button to learn more about that one. I've got 4 different pinks cut so far.

So that brings me up to date with you all... Thanks for stopping by.  And thanks for writing such entertaining blogs. I love blogging.  It adds alot to my life.

Hugs,
Terri
